About our Oils

We care about what goes on your skin as much as you do, and when it comes to soap that means starting with oils + butters that help to nourish, condition, and clean.

  • Apricot oil, also known as apricot kernel oil, is a lightweight, soft oil. Apricot oil contains high levels of total phytosterols, tocopherols, b-carotene, along with vitamins A + E. This content helps support the skin’s protective barrier and improves elasticity.

    Apricot oil is frequently used for its emollient and nourishing properties, especially since it can often be used by those with sensitive skin types. When used in cold process soap it produces a conditioning lather.

  • Avocado oil is a heavy, slightly waxy oil that penetrates deeply into skin. Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B, D + E, amino acids and phospholipid lecithin.

  • We proudly source our beeswax directly from American apiaries.

    Beeswax has an extensive history of cosmetic use, for good reason. The non-comedogenic wax provides a barrier on the skin's surface, protecting from irritants and weather while allowing the skin. to breathe. Sensitive and irritation-prone skin benefits greatly from this quality. This protective barrier also helps retain moisture which helps skin stay hydrated and soft.

  • Castor Oil is a heavy, viscous oil that is deeply moisturizing. Castor oil is an emollient and a humectant, attracting moisture and locking it into skin. When used in cold process soaps, castor oil helps maintain the lather as well as adding to the fatty acid profile of the soap.

  • Cocoa butter is a rich, chocolate-scented butter that is easily absorbed into skin. Cocoa butter helps to replenish moisture by creating a protective barrier on the skin which prevents moisture loss.

    Cocoa butter is used for a wide variety of cosmetic applications because of its rich profile of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.

  • Natural, unrefined coconut oil is solid at room temperature and melts to a thin texture when applied to the skin. Coconut oil is comprised of medium chain fatty acids that reduce dryness and promotes moisture retention for the skin. Additionally, some of the fatty acids provide antimicrobial effects that help to combat bacterial, fungal and viral, pathogens. In cold process soaps coconut oil creates a lush, bubbly lather.

  • Jojoba oil is actually liquid wax rather than oil, and is similar to the oil that is produced by skin. Because of the similar structure to our own sebum, using jojoba oil can lead to less sebum production.

  • Kokum butter is a hard, slightly waxy butter that absorbs quickly into the skin. Kokum butter is high in essential fatty acids which help protect skin cell membranes.

    Kokum butter is a good alternative for people who have reactions to other commonly used butters. It is also an ideal option for those with acne-prone skin who may want to avoid thicker butters.

  • Mango Butter is a pliable butter that has a smooth, silky glide and absorbs easily into skin. It is rich in steric and oleic fatty acids which help bind to water and draw moisture into the skin. The overall profile of mango butter is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamins which boosts skin elasticity, suppleness and vibrancy.

  • Olive Oil is a medium weight, viscous oil that acts as a barrier on skin to lock in moisture. Olive oil contains a spectrum of fatty acids as well as Vitamin E.

    Commonly used in cold process soaps, olive oil provides a range of qualities to a finished bar. When used as the only oil, also known as a Castile style soap, a hard bar is formed that has a mild, gel-like lather. When used with a blend of other oils, the olive oil enhances the moisturizing effects of a bar by creating a barrier layer to protect skin from drying out.

  • Sweet Almond Oil is a lightweight, thin oil that absorbs quickly into skin. The oleic and linoleic fatty acids produce a conditioning lather, which is stabilized by the palmitic fatty acid content.

    Sweet almond oil is an emollient, softening the skin, and its humectant qualities draw moisture into the skin to support suppleness. It’s high in Vitamins A, B2, D + E.

  • Shea butter is a soft butter that absorbs easily into skin. Shea butter is high in oleic and stearic fatty acids, which produces a moisturizing and conditioning bar with a silky, stable lather. Antioxidant vitamins A, E + F help round out the nutritive profile of Shea butter.

Additives take our soaps + balms to the next level by adding additional benefits + qualities for exactly what you need. We keep it clean by only adding natural additives that serve a purpose and are people + earth friendly.

  • Activated charcoal is used in skin care to help draw excess oils and impurities from the skin. Due to its effectiveness, over time it can help keep pores deeply clean and reduce their appearance. Activated charcoal is especially good for those with irritation or acne-prone skin.

  • Arrowroot powder is a lightweight starch with a silky texture. It is added to body balms and butters to absorb excess oils and helps lend a silkiness to the finished feel of a product. Traditionally, arrowroot powder was used to aid in wound healing and to sooth irritations.

  • Carrot powder is a fine texture powder with a slightly chalky feel. High in beta-carotene, this is added to products to emphasize brightening effects and helps to absorb excess oils in body balm.

  • Wayward Bison’s Essential Oil Blend is a combination of Lavender, Tea Tree and Rosemary essential oils. The combination of these three essentials oils helps to emphasize the benefits of each. Together they create a pleasant, floral forest scent that is unique to our line of soaps and widely enjoyed.

    We use our Essential Oil blend in accordance with standardized safety protocols, and as such we limit our formulas containing our EO blend to 3%.

  • French Green Clay, or Montmorillonite, is a highly absorbent, cleansing clay. It helps absorb excess oils and impurities from the skin, as well as acting as a mild exfoliant.

  • We use American Honey sourced from various apiaries across the United States. Honey has been used for thousands of years in skin care due to its humectant and anti-microbial properties. When added to cold process soaps, the sugar content of the honey boosts the lushness of the lather.

  • Moroccan Rhassoul Clay is a tan colored clay with a very high absorption capacity. High in magnesium, potassium and calcium, this mineral-rich clay is a luxurious addition to any skin care routine.

  • Pink Himalayan Salt is a popular salt from the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan. Rich in magnesium and potassium, this anti-inflammatory ingredient helps to restore moisture and sooth irritations. This salt also acts as a mild toner for the skin, tightening and firming the skin and helping to keep pores clear.

  • Rose clay is kaolinite that gets its distinct pink hue from its iron oxide content. Rose clay is a very gentle clay that helps draw out impurities and mildly exfoliate while improving circulation.

  • Sea salt is a common ingredient found in skin care that helps exfoliate and rehydrate skin. Due to its magnesium, calcium, and potassium content, sea salt helps to balance, protect, and restore skin, making it a beneficial ingredient for a skincare routine. Sea salt helps deep clean pores and balance oil production, reducing the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

  • Turmeric powder has been used for thousands of years for its range of culinary, medicinal, and holistic uses. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric also inhibits melanin production which can be a cause of hyperpigmentation. Skincare with turmeric can help these blemishes naturally fade with regular use, giving skin an even tone. Turmeric also helps with microcirculation, supports collagen production, and blocks the enzyme responsible for reducing skin elasticity.
